After 23 days in jail, Paris Hilton is a free woman. The socialite jailbird was sprung from her cage in California amid a huge media scrum.

Hotel heiress Hilton smiled sheepishly as she left the Century Regional Detention Center near Los Angeles just after midnight local time (8am UK time), mouthing the word “Hi” to the waiting crowds. Paris, 26, stepped from the jail smiling and waving as photographers snapped away in a massive flashbulb frenzy. At the end of her “red carpet” walk she hugged her mother. With her blonde hair pulled back in a French plait and wearing a green blouse with white trim over a white top and blue jeans, Hilton then climbed into parents black 4×4, still waving and smiling.

Then she sped off in the Escalade SUV pursued by two photographers who sprinted down the middle of the Street in the hope of getting extra shots of the star. Seconds later, when the vehicle hit a red light, paparazzi trailing her jumped out of their cars and surrounded the vehicle. Sources said Paris had lost almost ten pounds during her stay, and that on her way out of jail, she had to get changed in a public rest room which “smelt rancid”. The Simple Life star was released from the jail after serving half of a 45-day sentence for violating probation on a driving charge.
